The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the MAP kinase family. MAP kinases act as an integration point for multiple biochemical signals, and are involved in a wide variety of cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, transcription regulation and development. This kinase is activated by various environmental stresses and proinflammatory cytokines. The activation requires its phosphorylation by MAP kinase kinases (MKKs), or its autophosphorylation triggered by the interaction of MAP3K7IP1/TAB1 protein with this kinase. The substrates of this kinase include transcription regulator ATF2, MEF2C, and MAX, cell cycle regulator CDC25B, and tumor suppressor p53, which suggest the roles of this kinase in stress related transcription and cell cycle regulation, as well as in genotoxic stress response. Four alternatively spliced transcript variants of this gene encoding distinct isoforms have been reported.

Ki-67 is found throughout the cell cycle that includes the G1, S, G2, and M phases; but not the G0 phase. Apoptosis has gained central importance in the study of many biological processes, including neoplasia, neurodegenerative diseases, and development. Cleaved caspase-3 detects endogenous levels of the large fragment of activated caspase-3, a protease that mediates apoptosis. Caspase-3 does not cross react with other cleaved caspases.

In addition, this protein regulates alternate splicing of the CFTR gene. A similar pseudogene is present on chromosome 20.

Aqua DePar is a water-soluable deparaffinization reagent which can be used for immunohistochemistry, H&E and special stains. Aqua DePar is non-flammable and safe to use. Paraffin is completely broken down and dissolved by Aqua DePar. This product eliminates the use of xylenes, xylene substitutes and alcohols, thus saving money and reducing toxic waste, hazardous and flammable materials, and exposure to child-bearing women. Hundreds of tissues and several different kinds of paraffin were tested for H&E, special stains and immunohistochemistry. A direct comparison was made with traditional xylene methods. No differences with Aqua DePar were noted between the two methods, except nuclear detail was more crisp and sharp with H&E staining with Aqua DePar compared to the traditional xylene method.
